Madonna Piercing

Facial Bling: I've debated whether or not to get a Madonna/Monroe piercing for a long time. It is basically a piercing that its the place of a beauty mark similar to Marilyn Monroe or Madonna (or even Cindy Crawford).

My other half: Ray doesn't mind either way, although he thinks I'm beautiful without it (what a sweetie) I'm stumped! So I'll let you help me decide!

The pressure: I thought I would grow out of the Madonna/Monroe piercing. I didn't! Its so femme and cute! First spotted the piercing at a club in Germany about 2001. I adore the little sparkle!

I change my mind a lot : Tatoos are all too permanent and switching haircolor/hairstyle is not enough excitement for me these days. Mein Kopf has been pink, purple, blue, red, green, brown, and orange. What's next?

Lefty or Righty: I have a little baby beauty mark on my right side. Since I have a right nose piercing, the Madonna would have to be on the left side, no?

The worry: Would hate to be judged as unprofessional or freaky. Will brides be turned off by it? Will is scar terribly? I recently talked to a few people in the same situation. They voiced a need for a change in personal appearance every now and then, one guy in particular, mid-30's said he felt the urge to do something! He had the urge to get a tatoo.

Main concerns: Teeth & gums! Love my dentist. Love my teeth. With the Monroe my gums might shrink (with time) from metal irritating the tooth enamel and gum tissue! Minus two stars.

Just like the rest? I had a belly button, ear, and tongue piercing, none of which healed correctly. I love my nose piercing, but it has lost novelty!

Yes or no? What do you think?

Personal opinions vary...from my experience:

I'm young, but since graduating college I've taken out 3 of my piercings. I've taken out my rook piecing, my eyebrow and my tongue. All of which I felt made me look unprofessional or at least made others look at me that way.

Biggest reason I took out my eyebrow was because I always seemed to catch it on something (a sweater) or bang it on something (Nate's head)...even after 5 years. Not to mention the first time I had it pierced my body rejected it so I had to have it re-pierced. Anyway, long story short-I have a huge red scar on my eyebrow that has never gone away or has gotten much better. I don't necessarily regret the decision to pierce it, but I was 18 and it worked; now, I wouldn't do it knowing the mark it's left and the annoying pain it caused, even though it was ridiculously cute.

Ear (rook) and tongue really weren't that big of a deal, I just got over them. BUT, I do totally agree with your point of teeth and gums. I've had mucho work on my mouth and if I knew I was adding something that would insure gum recession, hell no! It's a painful surgery! Do not sign me up for that!

Ok, now for the non-logical, piercing and tattoo loving (but tastefully placed) Kat: I love me a new tattoo or piercing.

.....can you tell I'm on spring break and bored out of my mind? man that was long......

:-) Kat

Hey Ap!

I agree...they're cool looking and very fun...but I would caution against it only because of the biz side of things...It'd be different if you worked in Vegas (I think) 'cuz you could get work no matter what you looked like...But you'd hate to lose work just because of a piercing...Hmm...thousands of dollars vs. vanity...hmmm...it's always been a no-brainer for me...but you know me, I'm perty darn conservative...As for the dental side of things...I try not to mess with my mouth...it does too much to be messed with...

You rock without it...you probably wouldn't have it in forever, so why have it for a little while? Try doing something else...Once a week, take on a different persona, and play act it all day...act like a spy all day, or a movie star...walk around town and only answer to "Marilyn" or something...don't put more holes in your face...(even if it does look cool...)

Your bud,

Cor

Hey there, I ran into this post while looking into getting a nose ring.

I was a little surprised to see just how many people deem a facial piercing unprofessional. I think times are changing. More and more people have tattoos and piercings and they're not just thugs, they are successful, intelligent people who see this for what it is; art.

If you're so concerned about being seen as unprofessional which is a valid concern (I have a fair sized tattoo on my left wrist and that was a concern I had when I was first getting it)talk to your boss about it. Let him / her know that once it heals you have no problems taking it out. And besides, tattoos and piercings are only really a big concern if you work in an office or a hospital. Beyond that people tend to be very open to the idea.

I would say go for it! Oh and I'm seriously disappointed in Cory Olsen for making the Marilyn out to be something only Vegas could accept. Be more open minded, it'll get you farther. And if only short-term, live it up to the max. Acting like a spy for a day may be a little fun but people will think you're fucking crazy. One last point before I leave you to respond. That shit's not about vanity. Just makes you feel more complete, like a piece was missing and now you're whole again. So I don't know about you but I'd rather be a little "vain" than a nut job.

I just got my monroe done about 2 days ago. Couldnt be happier :) i agree with marta. Life is short. And if you ever need to take it out you can. For me it really didnt hurt at all. i felt a pinch when it popped through the skin but thats it (sorry for the details haha) I think the day after was more painful than the actual piercing just cause i slept on it. but yeah go for it!
best of luck

And hospitals aren't really a concern now - I'm an RN (have been for 5 years) I have my nose and tongue pierced and I'm getting a Monroe piercing on Friday. I also have a visible tattoo on my arm - my boss has never had a problem with it, the head of the entire hospital has never had a problem with it. And the patients - they just like me for me, they appreciate my care. (I've actually gotten several compliments on my piercings and my visible tattoo from many of them.)
